Photo: EmVision Studios Chastity Bowick Co-Hosts Boston's 25th Annual Transgender Day of Remembrance "Dozens of small candles flickered in cupped hands under the dimmed lights of the Cathedral Church of St. Paul on Saturday night, as the names of 319 transgender and gender-nonconforming people who died over the past year were read aloud. The annual Transgender Day of Remembrance, officially observed Nov. 20, traces its roots to the unsolved 1998 murder of Allston resident Rita Hester, a 34-year-old Black trans woman, and has grown into an international day honoring members of the trans community lost to homicide or suicide. The observance was meant “not only to celebrate the lives that have been taken from us, but also to celebrate those that are with us,” said Chastity Bowick, lead organizer." Read the TDOR Boston Globe Article Here ‘Social justice warrior,' award-winning activist Chastity Bowick shares Pride journey "As we continue celebrating Pride, we're highlighting changemakers, trailblazers and groundbreakers. One in particular moved to Boston at barely 18 years old and turned her journey of self discovery into a roadmap for others to find resources and community when they need it most. “I am all around a social justice warrior,” said Chastity Bowick, who is a jane of all trades. “We have more work to do…” As an award-winning activist and transgender health advocate, Bowick's work reverberates through Boston at every turn." LGBTQ+ leaders: Chastity Bowick ‘gives a voice to the voiceless’ "Chastity Bowick currently provides “education, training and awareness” through her own company, Chastity`s Consulting & Talent Group, she told MassLive. “This work is important as it gives a voice to the voiceless who are trapped in a cycle of oppression placed upon them by society,” Bowick said. In her words: “Do this work for the greater good of others who may not be able to advocate for themselves. This work is empowerful, impactful, and draining so remember to take care of yourself. You can’t save everyone, all you can do is what you can with the resources your provided. If you don’t have enough resources, fight for more or create your own! " Read the MassLive Article Here Boston police recommit to solving murder of Rita Hester, whose death inspired Transgender Day of Remembrance "Rita Hester’s murder inspired Transgender Day of Remembrance , an annual nationwide vigil that honors transgender murder victims. Hester has come to symbolize the crisis of violence facing transgender people. For Hester’s family and LGBTQ+ people in Boston and across the world, her murder also represents the disregard police and media show for Black transgender murder victims, the unsolved case casting a long shadow on Boston detectives. Transgender health advocate Chastity Bowick organized Boston’s Transgender Day of Remembrance event this year. She said solving Hester’s murder is critical to preventing future violence against her community. “If they're solving her case from 1998, then that means that when something happens to us in 2023, 2024 — well, then maybe they will take it seriously,” Bowick said at this year’s vigil.."
